The Alpine Loop is currently OPEN. However, active wildfires in the area mean conditions can change quickly. Please check the resources below before and during your trip for the latest updates.

Important travel notes: Travel into Ouray is not recommended at this time. Hwy 550 is currently closed. Only locals can take the Hwy 550 detour north of Ouray. Other traffic is being routed over Lizard Head Pass. The Gunnison Forest in northwest Hinsdale County is closed due to the Gold Mountain Fire. Access to trail heads from CR 24 is closed. This does not affect the Alpine Loop.

About the Loop
The Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway is a network of four-wheel drive roads, open seasonally that connect Lake City, Ouray, and Silverton. It traverses passes up to 12,800 feet while showcasing old mines, ghost towns, natural wonders, beautiful wildflowers, and abundant wildlife.
